Bruce Williams design for the George Melly Sculpture has been unveiled. The winning design is for a series of three benches known as "Melly's Hat, Singing Lips and Suit" MORE DETAILS HERE

The event took place at St Mary's Church, Brecon on Friday 29th October. Elizabeth Jeffreys, Chair of the Appeal, led the proceedings and introduced Diana Melly with George's own words from his introductory programme notes to the first ever Brecon Jazz Festival in 1984.

Artist Bruce Williams presented the series of 3 sculpture models to the 60 or so in attendance and also led a "meet The Artist" session at The George Hotel, Brecon.

The winning design is for a series of three benches known as "Melly's Hat, Singing Lips and Suit"

The Mayor of Brecon, Cllr David Meredith, congratulated the appeal and Bruce Williams on the sculpture model and lent his support to the appeal as it embarks on the next phase of fundraising to make the design a reality in Brecon.

As part of our project to commission a permanent artwork for George Melly, we are also running a number of art and jazz school workshops with artist PIP WOOLF.

PIP WOOLF has facilitated drawing and sculpture workshops between 27th September and 8th October at six primary schools in and around Brecon. Work by the children will also be on display at St Mary's Church alongside the artworks in the auction.

George Melly Public Art Commission – launch of artist’s model.

Artist BRUCE WILLIAMS has won the design competition to create a public art work to celebrate the life of George Melly. Bruce Williams studied Fine Art at Gwent College of Higher Education, graduating in 1984.

Since 1990, he has had an extremely successful career in public art and his permanent commissions can be seen across the UK from Brighton to Blackpool, to Belfast. He has previously been commissioned to make work about Oscar Wilde and Tony Hancock.

On Friday 29th October at 12 noon the model for the George Melly public art commission will be unveiled by at St Mary’s Church, Brecon, Powys , LD3 7AA. The unveiling event is open to all.

Following the unveiling of the artist's model , there will be an opportunity for the public to ‘meet the artist’ at The George Hotel, George Street, Brecon, LD3 7LD where BRUCE WILLIAMS will also be giving an audio / visual presentation about the winning design.

Background Information:

- The George Melly Sculpture Appeal is a registered charity based in Brecon which is fundraising to commission a public artwork to celebrate the life of George Melly and his connection with Brecon and Brecon Jazz.

- George Melly was the first musician to be contracted by Brecon Jazz for the 1984 festival. He and his wife Diana had a home in Scethrog just outside Brecon for nearly 30 years.

- George Melly was also an art collector, writer and critic and at one time the President of the Contemporary Art Society of Wales.

- This part of the sculpture project process is part-funded through the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007 - 2013 which is financed by the European Union and the Welsh Assembly Government
