The George Melly Sculpture Appeal is delighted to announce the ideal warm-up for Brecon Jazz 2010 with a special charity evening starring Marcia Pendlebury at Brecon Guildhall on Thursday 5th August (the day before the Jazz festival starts).

Deborah Anthony of the appeal committee said: "Marcia and her band will be performing "The Empress and The Lady", incorporating highlights of her celebrated Bessie Smith tribute which ran to rave reviews at Edinburgh and subsequently toured extensively across the UK"
The dramatised two part show recounts the lives and singing careers of two of the aristocrats of Jazz singing: Bessie Smith (The Empress) and Billie Holiday (The Lady).
Marcia's band, specially assembled for the occasion, will feature Roy Williams on Trombone with narration by Ian Milton.
Bessie Smith, in particular, was an inspiration to Melly himself. When a young and slightly tentative Marcia, anxious for guidance and keen to advance her singing skills, met George at one of his concerts in Manchester, she received 3 words of advice : "Listen to Bessie"
Marcia did indeed listen to Bessie and later went on to enjoy great success in her career singing and touring internationally. She and her late husband Keith were regular fixtures at Brecon Jazz, whilst Marcia appeared on stage with Melly, her mentor, on numerous occasions.
Marcia added: "I am delighted to bring the Bessie show and a new tribute to Billie back to the stage in memory of George in aid of The George Melly Sculpture Appeal. George was a great character and a great friend to me and many others locally.
He was also a great supporter of the Jazz festival over a period of nearly 25 years. How fitting that the Guildhall, the day before Brecon Jazz starts, should be the setting to remember George, Bessie and Billie. I am looking forward it very much and hope to see many old friends and friend's of George's on August 5th"
